Sustainability
We are firmly committed to sustainable development, to creating social value and to generating wealth and well-being for Barcelona and the surrounding area.
01. Sustainable catering
Fira de Barcelona’s catering department, Gastrofira, is committed to promoting sustainable practices and implementing the targets set out in the SDGs, strengthening the links between food, people and the planet.
At Gastrofira, we have launched several initiatives to reduce food waste, develop programmes for precise food production and cut down on single-use materials, amongst many other actions.
02. Environmental impact
Local suppliers and sustainable menus
In order to reduce carbon emissions caused by transport, at Gastrofira we are committed to working with local suppliers and producers, and to ensuring that 80% of the products sourced for our production are locally sourced (within a 100km radius). Furthermore, we require our partners and suppliers to adhere to sustainable policies.
We also adapt our menus to seasonal produce and work with event organisers to create more sustainable and healthy catering options for their events.
03. Donation of surplus food
At Gastrofira, we regularly donate healthy and surplus food to people at risk of social exclusion through the ‘Barcelona Shares Food’ programme, in collaboration with the NGO Nutrition Without Borders. We help organisers to put together a programme that enables us to meet our sustainability targets and reduce food waste.
We also offer a new service for donating unused catering equipment (plates, cutlery, tables, etc.) to social organisations (such as the Red Cross, amongst others) via Barcelona City Council, or recycling vegetable oils for social purposes through Rastro Solidario.
